nitpost.in Prayagraj: Two students of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A), Allahabad, Paawan Kumar and Shefali Vinod Ramteke, have won the prestigious award in CISCO global problem solver challenge 2020. Both have secured 3rd position in CISCO’s India impact category in CISCO global problem solver challenge.
They will receive $10,000 to support their team and further develop the technology. CISCO global problem solver challenge is a global competition where students and entrepreneurs participate from all over the world that has developed a solution that drives economic development or solves a social or environmental problem. The result was declared on August 5.
CISCO will provide them with further support and mentorship for a period of three years for advancement in their technology and solution to help them accelerate their breakthrough technology. Over 500 participants took part in the global challenge from over 12 countries such as Kenya, USA, Indonesia, Mexico, UK, Poland, Cameroon, Tunisia, etc. and the team went through rigorous screening rounds for 6-8 months. They received feedback, mentorship, and support throughout the challenge duration from CISCO.
Both IIIT-A student have developed an agriculture drone that is supported by the design innovation center IIIT Allahabad. The proposed drone decreases the amount of prolonged pesticide exposure to those who manually spray pesticides. It is an AI system that can cover almost ten times the amount of land in an hour that someone can manually do on their own in a day, decreasing the harmful effects of pesticides and increasing the overall output of crops for farmers.
The team has been working on drones for the past 3-4 years and now are looking forward to creating revolutionizing technology for the agriculture sector in India through their drone solution.
Both Ph.D. scholars are working under the supervision of Prof Suneel Yadav and Prof Pritish Varadwaj at IIIT Allahabad, respectively.
Prof P Nagabhushan, director IIIT-A has congratulated both for bringing laurels to the nation as well as IIIT-A.
