The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), an initiative of seven Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-s and the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc), has launched a series of free online courses.

IIT Madras being one of the top free online course providers, has announced the list of 400 free online courses and the enrollment procedure under this programme. The institute plans to run these courses in its July to December session - a move adopted due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic-led lockdown scenario in several states.

The lessons of these courses will be in the form of YouTube-live video sessions, weekly/monthly assignments or through study material available online. The web portal of NPTEL has already reached more than 471 million plus views owing to the gaining popularity of online courses in recent circumstances.

Online registrations for the same have already started on the official website of NPTEL. The last day to register for these free online courses is July 27, while the lessons will end on September 1. Examinations, thereafter, will commence on September 27 and will be held in two shifts from 9 am to 12 noon (morning) and 2-5 pm (afternoon).

Students will have to pay a fee of Rs 1000 for their chosen online course. A certificate will be issued only if the student scores 25 percent in the best six assignments out of the total eight assignments. Alongside, it is mandated to score 75 percent in the certification examination conducted by IIT Madras.

The credit will be transferred to the student, only after he/she passes the certification examination, as approved by the regulations of the institute he/she is affiliated with.
